Alternate Compost Methods

Backyard compost piles and worm composting are the most popular methods of composting, but they are not the ONLY compost methods. This section offers effective methods which you can use instead of or in addition to pile or worm composting.

Most urban and suburban municipalities prefer or require that you not compost food wastes in your backyard compost pile because of the pests that may be attracted to food, as well as odor problems. Dog and cat feces are also prohibited in home compost bins in many areas, and aren't recommended even if they are permitted. As long as you keep pet feces away from children, pregnant women, water supply, and edible vegetation, these methods will work for both food and feces.

The first three methods will work for yard wastes and other organic materials, too, but may not accomodate large volumes of material at one time.
